In accounting, there are two main types of degrees: MA and MS…

Is accounting an MA or MS?

In accounting, there are two main types of degrees: MA and MS. The MS degree is more focused on accounting, while the MA degree is more general. If you want to work in accounting, you will need to have an MS degree. However, if you want to work in another field, such as finance or business management, then you may want to consider an MA degree.

An MAS program is a course of study that takes roughly five years to complete and that leads to a master’s degree in accounting. The focus is on providing domestic and international students with the technical knowledge and professional skills (Double Declining Balance Method) they need to work as accountants in public, private, and not-for-profit accounting.  MAS programs prepare graduates for careers in taxation, auditing, financial planning, business strategy, and even management.

The MS program is a course of study that takes roughly three years to complete and prepares graduates for careers in public accounting or industry. The focus is on preparing students with the technical knowledge and professional skills they need to work as accountants in public, private, and nonprofit organizations.

What is the difference between MBA and MSA?

While there are similarities, the main differences between an MBA and an MSA are in their structure, purpose, and type of work offered.

An MBA focuses on teaching students the business skills they need to know in order to advance within their organization or start their own company. An MSA, on the other hand, focuses on teaching students the accounting and financial skills they need to know in order to work in the accounting or finance industries. Classes are usually taken during the day so that students can continue working full-time.

The purpose of an MBA is to give students a broad understanding of business law so that they can work in a variety of positions in the business community. The purpose of an MSA, on the other hand, is to give students a deep understanding of accounting and financial principles so that they can work as accountants or financial analysts.

What is the application of MSA?

There are many ways to apply for an MSA after graduation. Some of these include working for an accounting or financial firm, becoming a CFO, being employed by the government in some way, or working directly with companies to offer financial advice.

A student completes approximately 60 credit hours before being awarded the master’s degree.

What is the difference between MAcc and MS accounting?

The Master of Accountancy (MAcc) degree generally takes just one to two years beyond the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA). However, MS accounting generally requires an additional three to four years at a graduate school. A student completes approximately 60 credit hours before being awarded the master’s degree. The MAcc is typically completed in 120 credit hours, including an internship.

The MACC prepares students to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam in most places. The MS accounting does not always prepare students to take the CPA exam, but instead focuses on other areas of accounting, such as auditing or taxation. The MS degree might also prepare students for an accounting-related career such as external or internal auditor, analyst, investment officer, and financial reporting manager.

Aspiring accountants should consider their future goals for the degree when weighing different educational options. An MAcc degree might lead to a position in public accounting or industry. The MS degree might prepare graduates for careers in higher-level accounting or be useful for those who are looking to continue their education in a doctoral program.

If you’re looking to become an auditor, the MSA program might be more appropriate because it focuses primarily on auditing, taxation, and financial reporting. However, if you’re looking to go into industry or own your own business after graduation then an MAcc might be more appropriate.
